As one of the larger cities in Mississippi, there’s lots of stuff to do in Meridian. The Mississippi Children’s Museum is among the city’s best attractions. It's brimming with great exhibits – inside AND out. In fact, one of its best exhibits, My Fantastical Backyard, is located outside the museum. A unique play space modeled after the whimsical works of author and artist Edgar Parker, it's the stuff childhood dreams are made of.
Just a couple months after opening in March 2021, the Mississippi Children’s Museum of Meridian debuted a magical outdoor exhibit, My Fantastical Backyard.
The fenced-in, open-air gallery opened to a warm reception – complete with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Spanning more than one-half acre, the unique play space is meant to inspire children to unleash their imagination.
More specifically, it brings the world of Edgar Parker to life.
Parker, a Meridian native, is known for his detailed, fanciful drawings. He would often combine naturalistic elements with fantastical scenarios and elaborate costumes, resulting in whimsical characters that appeal to kids and adults alike.
Many of Parker’s quirky characters can be found throughout My Fantastical Backyard.
There are also lots of enchanting features, like a garden and waterfall.
Between the setting and the characters, a visit to My Fantastical Backyard is like stepping into one of Parker’s books – and that’s the point.
According to the museum’s executive director, kids visiting My Fantastical Backyard can set out on their own quest, just like Parker’s characters, who often embark on magical journeys.
Offering visitors the opportunity to experience the physical benefits of playing outdoors in a magical setting, it’s no wonder kids AND adults love My Fantastical Backyard.
