Mississippi has spawned lots of famous folks AND one well-known amphibian, Kermit the Frog. That’s right! You no longer have to wonder, “Where is Kermit the Frog from?” because everyone’s favorite Muppet is from the Magnolia State. And the best part is that there’s an entire museum dedicated to the beloved frog and his creator, Jim Henson. Keep reading to learn all about one of the most unique museums in Mississippi.
Everyone knows who Kermit the Frog is, but not everyone realizes he was born in the small town of Leland, MS.
As a way to commemorate their most famous resident, Leland opened the Birthplace of Kermit the Frog Museum in 1991. It’s housed in the town’s Chamber of Commerce building.
A delightful visit for all ages, the museum is brimming with puppets and memorabilia that honor Kermit and the rest of the Muppets as well as their creator, Jim Henson.
Speaking of Jim Henson, you’ll learn all about how he came up with the idea for America’s favorite amphibian. Hint: it goes back to his childhood days, when he commonly played in the swamplands of Leland.
Another thing that many don’t realize is that Kermit the Frog is loosely based on Henson’s boyhood friend, Kermit Scott.
When it first opened, the museum’s collection included three original Muppets - Dr. Teeth, the Swedish Chef, and Chester the Rat. Eventually, these items had to be sent back to the Jim Henson Company; however, an original Kermit the Frog puppet was sent to the museum as a replacement.
Since then, the museum’s collection has grown tremendously.
Today, it houses countless educational displays, dolls, photos, videos, and memorabilia.
There’s even a giant stuffed Kermit for visitors to pose with for pictures.
In addition to the array of items on display, the museum also includes a gift shop, where you’ll find lots more Muppet memorabilia.
But, perhaps, the best thing about the museum is that it’s FREE to visit. Of course, donations are accepted.
