Most everyone is familiar with the high-end retailer Tiffany & Co. However, many don’t realize there’s a bit of Tiffany & Co. right here in Mississippi - and you'll find it at The Church of the Holy Trinity. A true work of art, the historic church contains several authentic Tiffany stained glass windows. And we must say, between the vivid colors and remarkable details, they're absolutely breathtaking. Take a look:
The Church of the Holy Trinity can be found in Vicksburg. Its exterior is lovely, but it's no comparison to the interior of the church.
Like many places of worship, the church's interior features colorful stained glass windows.
However, unlike many places of worship, the stained glass windows at Holy Trinity are the works of renowned glass artist, Louis Tiffany.
Louis Tiffany, who was the son of Tiffany & Co. founder Charles Tiffany, has been revered a genius for his glass work, especially when it came to his ability to capture light.
Incorporating texture into his work was another talent of Tiffany's. Throughout his career, he had many prominent clients, including Mark Twain and President Chester Arthur.
Construction of the church was completed in 1880. The stained glass windows, which were paid for mainly by donations from Civil War veterans around the country, were added to Holy Trinity in the years that followed.
Making the windows even more special is the fact that they’re one of the first post-Civil War memorials dedicated to both the Union and Confederacy.
Not all the stained glass windows are Tiffany originals, though. Of the 14 that line the sides of the chapel, six are Tiffany originals.
Initially, six may not seem too impressive. However, it’s estimated that there are only 10 in all of Mississippi - a fact which definitely boosts the impressiveness of that number.
Aside from the six at Holy Trinity, records indicate there is one at Ventress Hall, which is on the University of Mississippi campus, one at Columbus’ St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and two at Natchez’s Trinity Episcopal Church.
Though not Tiffany originals, the other stained glass windows in Holy Trinity are also quite impressive.
