An old-school favorite, the Neshoba County Fair has been helping people kick off summer since the 1800s! And though it’s stayed true to its roots, don’t assume it hasn’t evolved throughout the years. Now billed as "Mississippi’s Giant House Party," it’s grown from a two-day meeting of local farmers to a week-long affair that attracts thousands. See for yourself why this gem is considered the best summer country fair in Mississippi.
The Neshoba County Fair, which takes place the last week of July, isn’t just one of the biggest events in Mississippi. It’s also the “largest campground fair” in the United States.
The fair made its debut in 1889 when it was known as the Coldwater Fair.
In 1891, the fair’s name was changed to the Neshoba County Stock and Agricultural Fair Association. In that same year, it moved to its current locale.
These days, the Neshoba County Fair is a much-anticipated event that’s attended by upwards of 25,000 people every year!
During the week-long affair, the fairgrounds come to life with rides, games, vendors, a petting zoo, antique car show, livestock shows, and musical entertainment.
And there are, of course, loads of classic fair foods.
Horse races are another hallmark of the fair and are held on the fairgrounds race track, which is the only licensed horse track in Mississippi.
The race track isn’t the fairgrounds’ only unique feature, though. When you attend the fair, you’re sure to notice the hundreds of cabins scattered about.
The cabins, which have been passed down through families for generations, are used for lodging.
Divided into several neighborhoods, most of the cabins are a few stories high and can sleep at least 30 people. In addition to the cabins, there are more than 500 RV sites to accommodate overnight attendees.
Offering food and fun for everyone, it’s no wonder the Neshoba County Fair has remained a summertime favorite for centuries!
