With the beautiful weather we’ve been experiencing lately, it’s nearly impossible to stay inside. And that’s okay, because the state if full of incredible sites that are perfect for taking in the great outdoors. From parks and hiking trails to secret swimming spots, here are 10 FREE outdoor activities you can’t afford to miss.
1. Tour one of Mississippi’s most mysterious cemeteries.
The Natchez City Cemetery dates back to 1822, making it one of the oldest burial grounds in Mississippi. And with a statue that seems to move on its own and several strange tombstones, it’s also one of the most intriguing. Tour the cemetery daily from 7 am until dusk.

2. Follow in the footsteps of residents from yesteryear.
Located at milepost 41.5 on the Natchez Trace, the Sunken Trace offers a unique glimpse into the past. Just as the name implies, this portion of the historic path appears to be sunken – something that was caused by thousands of people, horses, and wagons walking on the easily eroded soil. In some spots, it's 30' deep!

3. Find your new favorite swimming spot.
Perfect for soaking up some rays, this secluded swimming spot features a sand-and-rock-bottom creek with a sandy beach. As the name implies, the water is a bit low, but it’s extremely clear, making it a great spot to go for a dip.

4. Spend the night at a Mississippi ghost town.
Head to milepost 54.8 on the Natchez Trace, and you’ll find the ghost town of Rocky Springs. Once a bustling community with over 2,000 residents, the area now includes a campground and plenty of trails so you can easily explore what once was.

5. Sail away to a tropical paradise.
At just 1/4-mile from Biloxi’s coastline, anyone with a small boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard can access Deer Island. Perfect for some fun in the sun, minus the crowds, the secluded spot features a white sand beach, pristine water, and unrivaled views.

6. Go for a stroll on The Nature Trail.
Located in Natchez, The Nature Trail runs along the Mississippi River, offering incredible views of the famous waterfront. The 0.43-mile, 3-tiered trail is rated as medium in terms of difficulty; however, it’s lined with relaxation areas and shaded benches, making the trek a bit easier.

7. Visit one of the most beautiful small towns in the state.
If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors and all that comes along with it, Iuka is the place for you. Despite its tiny size, the town boasts a state park, two city parks, a lake with a waterfall, and more.

8. Spend the day at an outdoor treasure.
Spanning nearly 50,000 acres in three counties, the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is the ultimate outdoor destination. Two major lakes make it a prime fishing spot and with several trails, it’s a great place to go for a hike. Be sure to bring along your camera – the refuge is also known for its great photo-taking opportunities.

9. Enjoy the outdoors at Mississippi’s lost park.
Known as the "River Wonderland," the Great River Road State Park is located along the historic byway of the same name. Head to the park, and spend the day checking out the Mississippi River from the park’s 75’ observation tower, fishing in Perry Martin Lake, or enjoying an outdoor lunch in the picnic area. Keep in mind, the park does charge an entry fee. But at $4 per 6 people, it’s as close to "free" as you can get.

10. Soak up some sun at a hidden beach.
This gorgeous white sand beach overlooks Bay Springs Lake and includes a playground area, fishing pier, picnic tables with grills, and a volleyball court.
