From train rides to train-themed hotels, parks, and restaurants, there is no shortage of things to do for anyone in Minnesota who loves trains. Anyone who has ever loved riding the rails will find a train activity they love. In Minnesota, a train-themed museum beckons enthusiasts to learn about trains, enjoy an incredible collection, and maybe even pick up a new hobby. Read on to learn about Minnesota's model railroad museum.
The Twin City Model Railroad Museum is located at 668 Transfer Road in St. Paul, Minnesota. The museum started with a small group of enthusiasts in 1934 and has now grown into a huge collection.
When you visit, there are many different trains to check out in this large space, each layout full of interesting details. The amuseument park layout, pictured here, is sure to delight.
But the world-famous - and enormous - O scale layout is the crown jewel of the collection.
This layout is like a trip back in time, with vintage model trains shuttling their way through a landscape of Minneapolis landmarks.
There's a section modeled after the old Minneapolis streetcar system, a section on the Stone Arch Bridge, and much more.
Anyone who has even a passing interest in model railroads - or trains in general - will be inspired by this layout.
It has been painstakingly reproduced over thousands of volunteer hours over many years.
Even if you don't dabble in model railroads yourself, you will be enchanted by all of the quirky details.
Special events make the Model Railroad Museum even more fun to visit. During winter months, the Night Trains event rumbles through the museum.
During this time, overhead lights go out, and the lights of the exhibit go on. With the trains and the dimly lit towns, it makes for a truly magical experience.
This winter's Night Trains starts on November 4 and goes every Saturday until February 24.
