Minneapolis is a city on the move. There's always something new to try, and new businesses open up quite often. While this is definitely a good thing, it also means that sometimes we forget about the places we used to love. So maybe today is the day to take some time to appreciate the stores that we grew up with. Some of them are still around, but others have long since faded. Here are 5 stores that anyone who grew up in Minneapolis will remember visiting.
1. Woolworth's
One of the original five-and-dime stores, Woolworth's has a special place in the heart of many who lived while the store was in its heyday. People who lived in the Twin Cities were no different, frequenting the stores and lunch counters like many others across America. The old Woolworths building in St. Paul still stands, but is now dedicated to office space. Those who once shopped there can't pass by without remembering the old days.
2. Donaldson's
Donaldson's was a Minneapolis department store that was founded way back in 1883 and continued throughout most of the 20th century. Many who grew up in the area will undoubtedly remember shopping there or passing by the distinctive building. Sadly, Donaldson's closed for good in 1987.
3. Dayton's
Dayton's is a beloved Minneapolis department store that many will remember. It was founded in 1902 and stood for many years in downtown Minneapolis. The building most recently became a Macy's, which closed in early 2017. The building remains, but its future uses are not yet known.
4. Shoppers' City
Shopper's City was a small chain of stores in the Twin Cities during the 1960s and 1970s. There were six locations, and they offered groceries, home goods, barber shops, pharmacies, and other amenities. Those who were around then will also remember Zayre Shoppers' City, the chain of furniture stores owned by Shoppers' City.
5. Target
As the home of Target headquarters, we couldn't leave everyone's favorite store off the list. Though it started off as part of Dayton's, Target quickly grew from its original location in Roseville. By the 1980s, it was opening other locations nationwide. Still, people who lived in Minneapolis had the benefit of enjoying Target stores from the very beginning.
