Summertime brings along a real sense of magic, whether you’re a fan of the great outdoors or more of an indoor enthusiast. No matter how you choose to spend these long, hot days, there’s so much to explore in and around the Motor City - with new attractions and events popping up every day. As you craft your ultimate summertime bucket list, don't forget to include these eight awesome Detroit options.
1. Have a picnic at Milliken State Park and Harbor
If you appreciate sunshine, fresh air, and waterfront beauty, make your way to the Motor City’s amazing state park for a picnic or stroll along the shores of the Detroit River. There’s so much to see here during the summer months, whether you’re gazing at passing boats and freighters or simply admiring colorful garden spaces. There’s no better way to escape the stressful realities of city life.
2. Take a tiki boat tour
In the mood for a party? We recommend embarking on a fun-filled tiki boat tour via Aloha Tiki Tours, which offers excursions from Detroit, Wyandotte, and Saint Clair Shores. During your outing, you’ll bring along your own beverages and enjoy a two-hour adventure on the water with up to six guests per boat. Who says you can’t enjoy a tropical outing right here in Metro Detroit?
3. Drink, dine, or unwind at Campus Martius Park
While Campus Martius Park is beautiful all year long, there’s something exciting about dropping by in the summer months to enjoy its unique beach space. That’s right: you’ll find sand, beach chairs, cocktails, and more smack dab in the middle of the city when you venture to the park. Kids will enjoy the chance to play in the sand, while adults can snag food and drinks from convenient eateries like The Fountain Detroit.
4. Take a bike ride along the Dequindre Cut
If you’re an active type, you’ll love perusing the Dequindre Cut. This one-of-a-kind pathway follows the route of a defunct railroad line and extends for just over a mile and a half through multiple neighborhoods. Along the way, you’ll spot an array of public art pieces and commissioned graffiti that’s just begging to be photographed. Stop for a break at one of the greenway’s grassy areas before wrapping up in Eastern Market.
5. Reconnect with Mother Earth at Belle Isle Nature Center
This hidden gem on Detroit’s beloved island park is perfect for visitors of all ages who are interested in wildlife, nature, and more. With an educational emphasis on conservation and stewardship of the land, this welcoming spot features animal-based exhibits, special events including birdwatching classes, and so much more. Admission is free with entrance to Belle Isle itself.
6. Step back in time at the Detroit Historical Museum
Let’s face it: when temperatures are scorching hot, sometimes we just want to spend time in an air-conditioned building. Museums are the perfect answer, offering Detroiters the chance to have fun and make memories while avoiding the heat outside. The Detroit Historical Museum is one must-visit spot, featuring a variety of exhibits that take guests through our city’s fascinating past. You might just feel like you’ve stepped out of a time machine as you stroll through.
7. Dig into a refreshing treat from Detroit Water Ice Factory
Who doesn’t love a cold dessert after a long day of summertime fun? When your sweet tooth is tingling, Detroit Water Ice Factory certainly has you covered. This fantastic spot on Woodward Avenue is a must-visit locale for everything from frozen delights to hot pretzels and small bites, all served by a friendly staff. You’ll undoubtedly be coming back for seconds.
8. Dip your toes in the water at Belle Isle Beach
No summer bucket list is complete without a trip to the beach, and we’re lucky to have a waterfront destination right here within the city limits of Detroit. Belle Isle Beach is unique in that it offers access to the Detroit River and provides lovely views of the Motor City skyline. Bring along the sunscreen, throw on your swimsuit, and head out for a relaxing time along the shoreline.
