The introduction of drone video technology has allowed curious explorers to experience some of the world’s most incredible attractions from new heights. This has been especially true here in the Great Lakes State, where drone videographers have explored everything from sand dunes to abandoned buildings, often revealing previously unseen gems or providing insight into longstanding Michigan mysteries. If you’re enchanted by drone footage, we discovered one video that will completely capture your imagination. Get ready to embark on a fascinating virtual adventure of Poverty Island, Michigan.
Most Michiganders are familiar with Mackinac Island and even Beaver Island, but have you ever heard of Poverty Island?
This uninhabited island sits within Lake Michigan and might just boast some of the state’s most unique history.
The island itself is government-owned and technically located in Delta County, which is part of the Upper Peninsula.
At the heart of Poverty Island is its now-defunct Poverty Island Light Station, which sits in disrepair and adds an eerie vibe to the surrounding landscape.
This eeriness isn’t entirely without supporting evidence: throughout the years, Poverty Island has been home to its fair share of strange, downright spooky occurrences. In fact, many former lighthouse keepers and assistants have faced untimely deaths after becoming affiliated with the light station. In June 2019, further misfortune befell the 200-acre island, which was struck by on-and-off fires throughout the land.
While closed to the public, a drone video from Eddie Verhamme allows viewers to explore the many wonders of this one-of-a-kind destination. This particular drone video offers unique insight into the island's rugged natural beauty, which is only enhanced by its mysterious past.
In addition, the footage includes clips of nearby St. Martin Island, another remote locale that remains off-limits to the general public. St. Martin Island houses its own lighthouse, which was constructed in 1905, some 30 years after the construction of the Poverty Island Light Station.
While we might never fully understand the mysterious nature of these two Michigan gems, we’re grateful for the chance to virtually explore these beautiful and historic islands via drone.
While Poverty Island in Lake Michigan may be off-limits, it's awesome that there are ways to see it from above!
