But did you know that there’s a greenway right here in the city that will take you on a one-of-a-kind adventure? If you’re searching for a bit of fresh air, look no further than the Dequindre Cut.
The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a recreational path that extends for two miles.
Joggers, walkers, and bicyclists can access the path via separate entry points at Lafayette Street, Gratiot Avenue, or Woodbridge Street.
The trail follows the Grand Trunk Railroad, which operated from the 1920s through the 1980s. Following years of abandonment, the Dequindre Cut was created in 2009.
Begin your journey with a few gorgeous glimpses of our beloved Detroit River, which is situated near the trail’s southernmost entryway. What’s not to love?
As you make your way along the smooth, paved path, you’ll catch glimpses of unique public art and graffiti. Much of this work has been commissioned by the city for visitors to enjoy.
Take in the sights as you walk or ride down this 20 foot-wide trail. When you’re ready for a break, take advantage of the path’s plentiful benches and green areas.
If you’re lucky, you might even come across a musician or two performing live music under one of the walkway’s overpasses. Talk about a unique experience.

As the trail concludes, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Eastern Market district. Before heading home, stroll the marketplace itself or grab lunch at a local eatery.
While it’s certainly not your typical hiking trail, the Dequindre Cut is an absolute must-visit for longtime Detroiters and tourists alike. You’ll undoubtedly be back for more.
