If you believe in the paranormal realm, there’s nothing more exciting than checking out a supposedly haunted cemetery. Michigan is home to plenty of spooky destinations, but there’s one historic spot here in the Great Lakes State that some claim is teeming with ghosts, spirits, and other entities. When you’re ready to explore one of Michigan’s eeriest destinations, head to this unique cemetery.
Pere Cheney Cemetery is located off Center Plains Trail near Roscommon.
This locale is all that remains of the once-bustling town of Pere Cheney, which was founded as a lumber settlement in the 1870s before it was slowly abandoned.
By the early 1900s, Pere Cheney was deemed a ghost town after the decline of the local timber industry. Today, the cemetery stands as a reminder of what once was.
If you choose to explore the small but reportedly haunted cemetery, be sure to arrive before dark, as entrance is forbidden after sunset. You’re in for an adventure.
In total, 90 people were buried within the cemetery. Today, many of the tombstones throughout this remote location are broken, which only adds to the spooky vibe.
Of course, urban legends abound throughout the area. Some tell stories of a "Pere Cheney Witch" who was hanged from a tree in the cemetery and buried nearby.
Over the decades, many paranormal investigators have ventured to the cemetery and reported experiencing everything from screams to cold spots.
Whether you believe in hauntings or not, one thing is for sure: a trip to Pere Cheney Cemetery will take you on a fascinating journey through a slice of Michigan history.
