Michigan has long been known as a home of blues and Motown music and it's also filled with beautiful natural places to explore. Why not explore both in one day?
The Motown Museum in Detroit is a must-see for any music lover as it's located at the original Motown Records recording studio where so many musical legends like Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, and Stevie Wonder recorded classic songs that we'll never forget.
Cherry Hill Nature Preserve is only 40 miles west of Detroit and is a gorgeous natural getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Berry Gordy Jr. started the original record company here and the museum was founded by his sister Esther Gordy Edwards. The whole enterprise is run by the Gordy family.
Berry was a songwriter who took out an $800 loan to build the original studio.
Motown greats like Martha & The Vandellas, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and Gladys Knight & The Pips recorded their music in this very room. Perhaps even on these instruments.
This is just a small selection of some classic, unforgettable albums that were recorded here. It's a musical history that has been loved for decades all over the world, and that has inspired countless musicians to follow.
After the trip through musical memory lane, take a drive out to Cherry Hill Nature Preserve for a relaxing time in wetlands, woods, and meadows with several established trails.
Parts of the trails are lined with wooden boardwalks and tend to be easier trails on the preserve's 160 acres. It's teeming with wildlife and has been a popular hiking area since 1998.
A setting like this is sure to bring relaxation and it's such a welcome sight. Birders love to come here to see wetland birds like warblers and bluebirds. The preserve also has a resident owl population.
The Motown Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and otherwise, open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. They change their exhibit once or twice a year. Cherry Hill Nature Preserve is open from dawn until dusk every day.
