Those of us who call Michigan home are well aware that our state features incredible beauty, both natural and human-made. From the shorelines of our Great Lakes to our lush forests and other unique attractions, there’s so much to appreciate throughout Michigan. One particular spot stands out above the rest as a beacon of beauty, hope, and delight for visitors from across the country and throughout the world.
Holland Harbor Lighthouse, often referred to as “Big Red,” is located at 2215 Ottawa Beach Rd in Holland.
This West Michigan gem is nothing short of iconic, serving as a bright symbol of Lake Michigan beach life and standing tall as a reminder of our state’s fascinating nautical legacy.
The lighthouse site first opened all the way back in 1872. In its earliest days along the shoreline, it consisted of a simple wooden structure that featured a pulley-operated oil lantern.
Though it has undergone changes and challenges to reach its current iteration, Big Red has retained a sense of timeless charm. Today, it’s one of the country’s most picturesque lighthouses.
Seeing Big Red up close can be challenging, as it sits past a private property zone and is accessible by foot on a limited basis. The views from Holland State Park, though, are magnificent.
When you stroll along the park’s pier or gaze across the channel, you’ll enjoy a spectacular vantage point of Big Red. Bring along your camera: this vibrant beacon is so worth capturing.
If you’re lucky enough to take a boat ride through the channel that connects Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan, you’ll also enjoy lighthouse views. Big Red’s charm is undeniable.
Whether you’re a professional photographer or more of an amateur, one thing is for sure: this historic lighthouse along the shores of Lake Michigan makes for an unforgettable subject.
