Michiganders are lucky to have access to some of the world’s most beautiful freshwater beaches. From the Great Lakes to the many rivers that flow through our state, there’s no shortage of spots to visit for water-lovers. But there is one destination in Michigan that boasts the bluest water you’ll see anywhere in the Mitten State: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s certainly a well-loved favorite, but it never fails to stun with its gorgeous natural scenery.
A visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes will allow you to experience all sorts of terrain. You’ll shuffle through sand, trek along shady forest paths, and drive down scenic roads as you explore everything the park has to offer.
But the shoreline would be far less spectacular without the breathtaking body of water that meets the land. Lake Michigan, while incredible no matter where it’s viewed from, seems to be particularly beautiful at Sleeping Bear.
For 35 miles, the National Lakeshore extends along the coast of Lake Michigan. This offers a plethora of opportunities for viewing the spectacularly blue water, both from a distance and up-close.
Check out one of many lookout points, including Log Slide or Pyramid Point. Climb a dune that towers far above the coastline and let yourself be amazed by the hues of turquoise and cerulean that swirl in the lake below.
At the Lake Michigan Overlook, you can even venture down the 450-foot dune to experience the cool waves firsthand. Immerse yourself in the refreshing blue water — but be prepared for a strenuous walk back up to the lookout.
Don’t forget your camera when you make a visit to Sleeping Bear, but keep in mind that although the lakeshore offers incredible opportunities for stunning photography, it’s impossible to fully capture the broad and beautiful view that stretches out before you.
So fret no more about visiting a tropical island or venturing to the shores of California to experience incredible blue waters. You’ve got a front-row look at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it’s right here in Michigan.
