In terms of weather, spring sometimes feels like a mirage on the horizon. However, springtime in Boston is officially here, and we want to make the most of it- snow or shine. Don't miss out on the following seven splendid activities in Boston in spring:
Celebrate the return of color to our most beloved garden with a stroll along the paths and a nostalgic Swan Boat ride. When it comes to free places to go in Boston, this is the ideal choice. The Swan Boats are always a pleasure. In fact, we think this lovely garden is one of the best places to visit in Boston in spring!
The cherry trees planted at the Arnold Arboretum include some rare native species and they’re a lovely sight in spring. One especially fun special occasion you can enjoy is Lilac Sunday, an annual celebration of the 369 lilac plants on display at this arboretum.
Whale watching tours start up again in spring, giving you the chance to witness these behemoths gliding through the depths. There are several whale watching operations to choose from in and around the city, but Boston Harbor City Cruises leaves right from Long Wharf and travels out to the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.
Willing to venture a little further afield? I cannot recommend Cape Ann Whale Watch strongly enough! Tours leave from Gloucester.
Pretty soon, kayak rentals will be opening for the season and you can get back on the water. Prefer to appreciate the Charles River from land? Then catch the Run of the Charles. This is actually the biggest flat-bottomed boat race in New England, featuring 1500 participants.
Although Castle Island is an accessible destination year-round, Sully’s has already opened for the season, so you can now load up on hot dogs and seafood before kicking back in one of the most interesting parks in Boston. If you're looking for great things to do in Boston in spring, Castle Island is an excellent choice!
BU’s Coit Observatory offers free Public Open Nights on Wednesdays throughout the year. As it gets warmer, this event becomes even more appealing. The Open Night is dependent on weather conditions, so check the BU’s Coit Observatory Twitter page for updates. The observatory is a great day trip in Boston - or should we say - night trip!
While not a natural wonder, Boston College’s Annual Arts Festival is fleeting, yet sure to impress. This multi-day event focuses on all types of art, from music to poetry to painting. Who doesn't love a fun and enriching festival in Boston?
