In a state with as much history as Massachusetts, historical buildings are found in every corner of the state. Located on Cape Cod, the Brewster Store has been around since 1866 as a general store serving customers for over 150 years. To walk through the doors of this historical shop is to take a step back in time.
The Brewster Store building started out as a church for the Universalist Society. Built in 1852 as a two-story structure, the congregation's attendance dropped during the Civil War and the decision was made to sell the building.
In 1866, William W. Knowles, who ran a store down the street, purchased the church for a dollar. He then had the steeple removed and made additional renovations to the building. The new general store was opened that year with the second floor reserved as an events space, known as "The Hall."
Throughout the years, the store changed ownership several times. In the 1970s, the general store was given the name "Brewster Store" and the owners sold hard-to-find household items like cast-iron cookware and enamel ware.
In 1989, the Brewster Store was refurbished, "The Hall" was reopened on the second floor and The Strawberry Patch and old Brewster Post Office were added. In 1993, the general store's own ice cream shop, The Brewster Scoop, was added to the shed out back. Stop here during the summer months to get a scoop of good, old-fashioned ice cream!
Visit the Brewster Store and take a nostalgic step back in time. When you walk through the doors, you'll be transported to another era, a time when life was a bit simpler
Inside, you'll discover clothing, books, toys, oil lamps, household goods, and more. It's a fascinating mix of modern and old-fashioned goods.
In keeping with the original purpose of a general store, the Brewster Store offers a wide array of local food items as well as an assortment of nostalgic penny candy, fudge, salt water taffy, jams, jellies, and coffee.
