We've featured a Western Maryland road trip and some of the most underrated places along the Eastern Shore. Now, it's time we dive into some of Southern Maryland's most impressive attractions. Many people tend to pass right by this area of the state but they're missing out. We could go on and on about what makes this area so unique, but we'll let the following 10 attractions do the talking for us.

1. Historic St. Mary's City

The history of St. Mary's City goes way back and you can learn all about it at this hands-on attraction. Witness historic ships up close, participate in fun colonial games, and see what farming was like in the 17th-century. All ages will enjoy this fun (and educational) spot.

2. Calvert Cliffs State Park

A scenic 1.8 mile hike will lead you to these white clay cliffs at Calvert Cliffs State Park. Once you arrive at this bay beach, feel free to search for fossils. You may even find giant Megalodon teeth!

3. Calvert Marine Museum

This place is like an aquarium, science center, and maritime museum all rolled into one. Visit with live animals, including otters, turtles, and all sorts of bay fish. Learn about the history of southern Maryland, including its first residents. Lastly, head outside for a walk along the boardwalk and then climb the stairs to the top of the on-site lighthouse.

4. Point Lookout State Park

Considering this area was once a prisoner of war camp during the Civil War, it's full of history (and maybe a ghost or two). Head here during the day for a hike or to simply enjoy the water views. Or if you're feeling brave, camp out for the weekend. Some claim to experience ghostly encounters once the sun goes down.

5. Mallows Bay

This Maryland bay is known as the "largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere." Over 100 ships from WWI were abandoned here years ago and today, you can still kayak or canoe over the rusting ruins.

6. Patuxent River Naval Air Museum

This underrated museum strives to preserve the history and heritage of naval aviation. It offers indoor and outdoor exhibits, featuring over 20 aircraft that you can walk right up to and observe every little detail. Know a plane lover who would adore this place?

7. Flag Ponds Nature Park

This is another beach in southern Maryland where you can hunt for fossils but its layout is quite a bit different than the previously mentioned Calvert Cliffs. Natural pools are spread throughout, which are perfect for wading or for little ones to safely splash around. Of course, you can also head to the bay area and swim or simply soak in the sun.

8. Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center

This hidden gem features one-of-a-kind sculptures among an enchanting woodland setting, an arts building, and many fun and interactive activities year-round. During warmer months, check out their fairy garden, where you can keep your eyes peeled for whimsical fairy houses hiding throughout the grounds. Kids will love it!

9. Historic Sotterley Plantation

This national historic landmark impresses in more ways than one. Learn about the history of this spot by taking a tour or simply explore the beautiful grounds for yourself. Keep an eye out for their unique events, including ghosts walks, wine fests, and their seasonal farmers market.

10. Slack Winery

This winery is perfectly located along Calvert Creek, making for gorgeous sights every time you visit. The wine is tasty, the atmosphere is relaxing, and you can even stay the night at the on-site inn if you'd like. Sounds like the perfect weekend getaway.
