In 1894, The Tome School, a college preparatory school for boys, was founded by millionaire and philanthropist, Jacob Tome. Located in Port Deposit, the institute accepted grades kindergarten through high school and quickly became a prominent and prestigious school to attend. Some even traveled from out of town for enrollment.
Upon his death in 1898, Jacob Tome had left an endowment and instructions for expanding the campus and several new granite buildings. The plans were carried out and The Tome School continued to thrive for several more decades.
Sadly, during the depression, the school fell on financial hardships and was forced to close its doors in 1941. Since then, it has been used for the Naval Academy Preparatory School, Susquehanna Job Corps Center, but now stands abandoned. You can find the newer Tome School in North East, MD.
The Port Deposit location while once glistening and full of life, is now weathered and crumbling. Several buildings remain full of trash, broken glass, and graffiti. The following images by photographer Marcus Ellis, shows how what was once a hopeful place for Maryland's youth, is now left forgotten.

Congress Heights is a mostly residential neighborhood east of the river that has emerged as a hub for Black culture and arts. It’s also home to the Entertainment and Sports Arena which holds many concerts and basketball games. So if you’re heading there for an event, make a day of it!
First, Coffee:
Start with an Ethiopian coffee from Buna Talk Cafe in Sycamore & Oak, a small retail village with over a dozen Black-owned local businesses. For something more untraditional, grab an Oreo milkshake from Corner Cafe, which also serves perfectly greasy breakfast sandwiches.
What to Eat:
Do yourself a favor and splurge on the crab cake sandwich at MLK Deli, a small deli in the basement of a rowhouse. Triceys D.C., an Afro-Caribbean food stand inside Sycamore & Oak, has unreal mac & cheese, jerk chicken, and fried white fish. And of course, you have to try the mumbo sauce at Hong Kong Delite, a carryout made famous by Keith Lee.

What To Do:
Shop for Black art, decor, and clothes from the woman-owned Anacostia Art Gallery & Boutique. Walk around and see murals, like the Go-Go music one on the side of Liff’s Market, or paintings of Black heroes along the wall outside Eagle Academy.
Grab cocktails from the bar inside Sycamore & Oak, then learn to line dance (only on Tuesdays). If you’re looking for something a little more intense, Ace Lounge has sugary cocktails and strobe lights to match for a weekend night you’ll probably regret.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days.
