When you think of Bethel, Maine, you might think about the wonderful mountains surrounding the town, the beautiful colors in the fall, or a charming small town. There is, however, a secret hiding within the town that few people know about. It may seem odd to some, but there is one museum that houses the largest collection of lunar meteorites in the world.
This unassuming building houses some of the coolest rocks and minerals found in Maine.
When the owners saw the massive amount of minerals and gems that could be found in the western mountains of the state, they knew that something had to be done. If efforts were not made to preserve these beautiful pieces, then they would not remain in Maine. So the idea to showcase and educate the people about these geological wonders was formed and the museum opened in 2019.
The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is a state-of-the-art museum.
From the time you open the doors, you will undoubtedly agree that the museum is worthy of a world-class rating. The displays are beautifully illuminated with technology woven throughout each exhibit.
Among all of the large rocks and the shiny gems, you will also find something a little more other-worldly. In the Space Rocks section of the museum, you will find the world's largest collection of lunar and martian meteorites.
Within the collection, you will find the biggest piece of the moon as well as the largest known martian meteorite.
Education is one of the top priorities of the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum so whether you are 8 or 88, you are sure to learn something when you visit. There is also a lab located on the property dedicated to research.
For a really interesting experience, you will also have an opportunity to hold a piece of the moon. There is nothing quite like holding a piece of space right here in a little town in Bethel. This truly is a one-of-a-kind museum.
With state-of-the-art displays, the largest collection of lunar meteorites, and loads of learning, The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is a wonderful way to spend the day. Nestled in the foothills of the beautiful surrounding mountains, and in a charming little town, this recorded-breaking museum is just waiting to be explored.
