In a state as old as Maine, interesting history isn't hard to find. From abandoned hospitals to downed fighter planes, it's hidden in plain sight throughout the state. But, one of the most interesting elements of Vacationland are the small bits of history that never made national news. Maine's small towns hold some of the richest stories. The oldest grocery store in the state is still in operation today and it reminds us of a simpler time.
The town of Hope has been around for an impressive 200 years.
The structure has always been an important part of the community, existing as a store as well as a Grange hall, an antique store, a general meeting place and a post office.
We love that the post office inside still exists to this day!
While some things have been modernized, the store still feels like living history.
Like all good Maine general and grocery stores, you can also pick up your fishing license and fishing bait, but nowadays you can also get some good internet access! Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days.
