During the long and cold winter months, many people just crank up the heat and stay home. However, there is a whole world out there to explore and it may be cold but it’s always completely worth it. Festivals are no longer bound to the summer months but have made their way into February where you can find the Ice Festival in Belfast, Maine. This annual event will have you bundled up and enjoying the best ice sculptures in the state.
The charming little harbor town of Belfast is filled with local restaurants and shops making it a great place to visit. The town overlooks Belfast Bay which is a smaller section of Penobscot Bay. Having the ocean as a backdrop makes this historic town also a beautiful place.
Every year in February the whole town comes together for the Ice Festival. Artists will put masterful sculptures on display and even have a competition for the best design. This three-day festival will be filled with activities making it a fun way to get outside this winter.
Right in the heart of Belfast, a bulk of the sculptures will be on display. However, if you want to see them all you can search up and down the streets of downtown. This makes for an interesting scavenger hunt and a great way to explore the town.
A block of ice is provided but participants are responsible to bring their own tools and imaginative design. A panel of judges will vote for a winner as well as crowd votes, then one lucky winner will be chosen to take the crown until next year.
Some of the sculptures will be depicting beloved characters and others will be entirely unique.
Finding all of the sculptures can be a blast but there are so many other things to do during the festival as well. Special food and drink events, crafts, and a lit-up walkway trail are just a few of the things you can find at the biggest ice sculpture festival in the state.
