We've all seen the films and television shows, but what happens when the zombie apocalypse becomes real? You might be able to rely on your Jeep during a Maine winter, but eventually it's going to run out of gas and you'll be stuck with zombies knocking on your windshield. Of all the states in America, Mainers are probably the most prepared for such a situation. Between our ability to live off the grid on rural land and the experience we have with less-than-glamorous times (have you been through mud season?) we shouldn't be too worried. But, just in case you'd like some additional ideas to ensure your survival, here's a fun article with 12 places to hide during a zombie apocalypse in Maine.
1. A Lobster Boat
Load up your provisions and get ready for a lifetime of lobster. Once you head to the open waters of the chilly Northern Atlantic, no zombie will be brave enough to come after you. Bring extra butter.
2. Deer Isle
Skip Bar Harbor and head to Stonington if you want to stay off the radar. As long as the zombies attack on a fairly foggy morning, you should be able to hide within the mist.
3. The Allagash River
Load up your canoe and take to Maine's rivers. As long as your arms hold out, you won't need to worry about running out of fuel and you can keep the zombies guessing by being constantly on the move. But, pack some waterproof matches. Canoe trips can get damp.
4. Nervous Nellie's Jams and Jellies, Deer Isle
The sculptures by Petter Beerits that make up the inventive village at Nervous Nellie's are the perfect place to blend. Sit next to this guy playing the piano and there's a good chance the zombies will pass on by. If they figure it out, you'll know that your last moments were spent as part of installation art. That's pretty cool!
5. Caribou
When was the last time you saw a zombie in The County? Exactly. Head to Caribou where only the most dedicated zombies are willing to travel. If they find you there, they've earned the right to eat you.
6. Perry's Nut House, Belfast
It might not actually help you if zombies are after you, but you might buy yourself some time hiding out in Perry's. While you're waiting for them to find a way inside, you can eat yourself through each of the delicious displays.
7. Fort Gorges
Perfect for its sheer inaccessibility, zombies will need to hire a private boat or manage to maneuver a kayak across Casco Bay to reach you here. The Civil War-era monument is made of crumbling granite and is covered by wild brush so it's also a good place to crouch down and hide in the event the zombies manage to swim.
8. Maine College of Art, Portland
Have you ever been inside during a First Friday Art Walk? This place is wacky in the most zombie-proof way. The undead will find themselves lost and confused among the contemporary art hanging from ceilings and attached to walls. If they manage to navigate through it all, you can always give them a palette knife to the cranium.
9. The Summit of Old Speck Mountain
"Why not Katahdin?" you ask... Because it's much too obvious! Any zombie with half a (dead) brain will think you've gone to the tallest peak in Maine. Instead, go for the FOURTH tallest and you'll be safe. Old Speck is located within Grafton Notch State Park near the town of Newry. The trails leading to the summit are steep so if the zombies do figure it out, there's a good chance they haven't trained hard enough to make it to the top.
10. The Ice Caves in the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness
Zombies lack manual dexterity, which will make it hard to maneuver down into the caves where you'll be hiding out. If they opt to simply hurl themselves down, you can always remove a crampon and hit them in the head.
11. Reny's
The zombies will probably find you here, but you'll be well equipped to fight them off. And, if you can't actually fight them off, you can cook them some cupcakes while wearing a snow suit (or flippers in the summer) and confuse them.
12. Becky's Diner, Portland
Becky won't save you, but at least you'll be stuffing your face with pancakes while the zombies are stuffing their faces with youcakes.
