While life in Maine isn't all THAT much different than life elsewhere - we still put our pants on one leg at a time, as they say - it can be pretty unique. There are some things we go through that others just don't understand. Has someone in Florida cleared their snow-covered windshield with the Gazetteer after a surprise snow storm? Unlikely. Here are a few bizarre experiences that every true Mainer can identify with.
1. You've hit a pothole and thought you might land in Canada.
Post-winter road damage in Maine is no joke.
2. You've "tried out" a hammock after breakfast and woken up just in time for dinner.
Those lake breezes and hammock swings miraculously cause entire days to fly by.
3. You've been overshadowed by the size of snow banks.
Walking the streets post snow plow can remind us how small we really are in the scheme of things. Or, it can just be really creepy.
4. You've had to repeat the same sentence over and over again to a non-Mainer.
The more they tell you that you speak with an accent, the more confused you become.
5. You've been in Northern Maine and watched two logging trucks pass each other going the opposite direction.
It's too bad they didn't coordinate earlier. Could have saved each of them a trip!
6. You've amassed a wide variety of Maine-related "things."
For no good reason except that you love everything having to do with Maine.
7. You've found yourself unknowingly engaged in a snow clearing race with a neighbor.
May the best man or woman win!
8. You've found yourself surrounded by a place that feels like another planet.
Like the beach after a storm.
9. You've left a kayak, boat or SUP on the beach only to turn around and find it swept out to sea.
The drama of our tides is one of the most unique in the country.
10. You've seen people dressed like this in other states because it's "cool."
But your dad's been dressing like this for winter hikes your whole life.
11. You've witnessed the most beautiful day and the most foggy day at the exact same time.
If only those boats stuck in the fog knew that it was a completely different experience just a bit further left!
12. You've driven 15 minutes out of a Maine "city" and been in the middle of nowhere.
People from away don't always realize that must of Maine looks just like this.
13. You've experienced the Northern Lights from your own backyard.
If you live in the right place, this is something you're lucky enough to experience more than once.
14. You've been ultra-relaxed in unexpected spots.
Going upta camp means severe relaxation vibes.
I love writing articles that talk about how wonderful it is to be in Maine. To keep the momentum going, here are a few reasons to love this state.
