There's tons to do in Louisville, but sometimes your budget just doesn't allow for extra activities. Luckily, we have plenty of options to get out and explore the city that don't cost a dime! These eleven spots in Louisville offer some great experiences that prove that you don't need to break the bank to have fun!
1. 21c Museum
21c is an awesome little boutique hotel and gallery in downtown Louisville with some seriously cool contemporary art to show off! Unlike most galleries, this one is free to visit and open 24/7, so if you are looking for a unique activity that you can enjoy anytime you like, 21c should certainly suit your needs. The permanent collection is pretty awesome, but the museum also rotates new exhibits into the mix all the time, so there is always something new to see here!

2. Old Louisville
This amazing historical district is home to tons of unique, beautiful old brick homes that are a true treat to the eyes! The neighborhood includes 48 blocks of downtown Louisville and is the largest historical district in the nation filled almost entirely with buildings featuring Victorian-era architecture. The homes here were built between 1850 - 1920 and showcase stunning design details and stained glass windows that just aren't found in modern structures. The neighborhood is an excellent place to spend a day wandering the streets and taking a look back into the old days of Louisville.

3. Frederick Law Olmsted Parks
Frederick Law Olmsted is considered one of the most influential landscape architects in the world and has designed some of the most famous natural spaces in the nation, including Central Park in New York City and the U.S. Capitol grounds; however, Louisville is home to one of only four completed park systems in Olmsted's impressive portfolio. Cherokee Park, Seneca Park, Iroquois Park, Shawnee Park, and Algonquin Park are some of the largest and most popular, but the system includes 18 beautiful parks and six parkways. Every single one should be visited at least once in your life!

4. Shakespeare In The Park
If you are out and about and looking for some free fun to be had in the springtime, head over to one of Louisville's parks and catch an incredible theatrical performance at Shakespeare in the Parks! This year's production is 'Julius Caesar' and can be seen in April and May at several different outdoor venues around town.

5. Tim Faulkner Gallery
Louisville is home to some amazing artists! The Tim Faulkner Gallery is housed in a 26,000 square foot renovated warehouse and features multimedia, modern, and performance art that will open your mind and show you the world from a whole new point of view. 6. Waterfront Park
Waterfront Park is one of the coolest spots in Louisville! With 85 acres and plenty of unique fountains and features to explore, Waterfront Park is the perfect place to get outside, appreciate beautiful views of the Ohio River, and take a leisurely stroll through the city. The park also hosts many of special events throughout the year!

7. Fourth Street Live
Even if you aren't headed to one of the restaurants and businesses at Fourth Street Live, this 350,000-square-foot complex is a great place to go for people watching! The area also hosts a ton of special events throughout the year, including concerts by famous musicians, 5K and Ironman races, parades, and holiday celebrations, many of which are free to attend.

8. Fossil Beds at the Falls of the Ohio
The Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation Area straddles the river between Kentucky and Indiana and is home to some incredible fossil beds where you can take a peek back into the prehistoric era and imagine some of the amazing creatures that once inhabited the area. While visitors are prohibited from removing fossils and bones from this protected area, it's fun to spend an afternoon poking around by the water and uncovering clues as to what life was like millions of years ago. The best time to visit is between August and October, when the water level of the Ohio River is at its lowest.
9. Louisville Nature Center & Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve
It's hard to believe that this incredible natural forest area is right here in the city! With over two miles of hiking trails through beautiful wooded areas and wildflower gardens, the Louisville Nature Center & Beargrass Nature Preserve offer abundant opportunities to catch a glimpse of wildlife, including over 30 different butterfly species and hundreds of birds and waterfowl. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring this amazing greenspace... without leaving the city!

This lovely natural area is located less than 30 minutes outside of the city, so it's perfect for a mini-getaway. There are 14,000 acres and over 35 miles of trails to hike, bike, and explore, and the 6,000-square-foot arboretum features more than 8,000 different species of trees! The arboretum and research forest are open to visitors for free on weekdays, but even the $5 per vehicle charge on the weekends is a pretty sweet deal for the opportunity to immerse yourself in this beautiful natural area!

11. Cave Hill Cemetery
Raise a drumstick for one of Kentucky's most iconic businessmen! Cave Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, as well as many other iconic figures, including boxing legend Muhammad Ali. The grounds and arboretum here are absolutely stunning and visitors are welcome to come explore the area's natural beauty and pay respect to those who have passed.
