If there’s one thing Louisiana can do better than any other state, it’s throwing a festival. Louisiana loves a good party! So much so that there are over 400 festivals in Louisiana peppered throughout the state. With that many events, you can pretty much bet that there’s a festival going on just about every weekend somewhere in the state.
We will throw a festival for just about anything, but there are a few festivals that have stood the test of time, and the Louisiana Watermelon Festival is one of them. This annual summertime festival in Louisiana is the perfect attraction to bring the family out for, enjoying that sweet sweet Louisiana watermelon! Mark your calendars - the Louisiana Watermelon Festival is back for its 60th year of fun, and you won't want to miss it.
Farmerville may be a sleepy little town in Union Parish, but for one weekend every July, it comes alive for the Watermelon Festival.
Louisiana has a fairly decent-sized watermelon crop, with over 250 growers producing over 2,500 acres of watermelons in the state. While watermelons are produced in about 25 parishes in Louisiana, most of them are grown in the northwestern part of the state as well as Washington Parish down in the southeastern part of Louisiana.
Most of the watermelons in the state are harvested in late June and July, making July a perfect month to celebrate this delicious fruit!
The annual festival takes place the last weekend of July, and the whole town gets in on the fun! Local businesses decorate their storefronts in anticipation of this family-friendly festival.
Founded in 1963, the Watermelon Festival gets bigger and better every year.
This year, the Watermelon Festival takes place July 28-29, 2023.
Good old-fashioned fun is the name of the game when you arrive at this festival.
Put your skills to the test with an epic corn hole competition.
The first day of the festival is jam-packed with activities, including the annual parade.
The parade rolls at 8:00 A.M on Saturday, July 29, starting at the Old Union Parish High School parking lot. From there, it heads south on Main Street and turns left on Highway 2.
Get there early to find yourself a good spot to enjoy the parade.
There will be plenty of activities that the whole family can get in on.
There will also be an arts and crafts area packed with local businesses selling everything from clothing to candles and other homemade crafts, and like any good festival, there will be plenty of food!
Speaking of competitions, local farmers will also be showing their biggest melons of the season in hopes to take home first place.
These are guaranteed to be some of the biggest watermelons you've ever seen, and they're grown right here in the Pelican State.
No watermelon festival is complete without a watermelon-eating competition.
Check the Watermelon Festival's Facebook Page to stay up to date on the line-up on when the competitions take place.
