Louisiana is no stranger to mystery and intrigue. From unsolved murder cases, to fugitives, to haunted boats, here are some of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries in the state.
1. Delta Queen Riverboat
This boat is said to have a haunted cabin after a ship captain died in Cabin 109. Mike Williams claims the ghost of that cabin eventually led him to fall in love with his co-worker Myra Fruge.
2. Star Crossed Lovers
Thomas Hotard and Audrey Moate were having an affair when Thomas was discovered shot in the head in his car and Audrey Moate went missing. Audrey’s body was never found. A man named Ernest Acosta accused his common-law wife of the crime 24 years later, but no charges were ever filed.
3. Hazel Head
Known under over 15 aliases, this woman was last seen in Bossier City, LA, where she was implicated in the murder of Charles Barker. She is currently still on the run and would be about 62 years old.
4. Jennings 8
Between the years of 2005-2009, 8 women were killed throughout the Jennings, LA area. A serial killer was suspected, but questions were raised when investigators realized that most of the victims knew each other well. Police misconduct is suspected in this grizzly unsolved string of murders.
5. The Whistler
In 1950, the case of the Phantom Whistler of Louisiana was smeared across newspapers. The whistler was terrorizing a young woman, Jacqueline Cadow. Others claimed to hear the whistler, but he was never found, and she eventually married without incident.
6. AJ Breaux
A recovering alcoholic, Mr. Breaux left an alcohol support group in late summer 1991 and was never seen again. Some claimed he relapsed and died drinking while others believe he was kidnapped.
7. Marie Laveau
Shrouded in mystery and legend, this Voodoo priestess practiced occult rituals in New Orleans in the late 19th century. From healing the sick to telling the future, there are countless stories about the magic of this powerful creole woman.
8. SKATERS
Eric and Pamela Ellender were found shot to death in their Sulphur, LA home. Originally Chris Prudhomme was accused of the crime and hung himself in his prison cell. Later it was revealed that he was a member of a satanic cult called SKATERS, or "Satan’s Kids Against the Establishment," that may have conducted a number of crimes. Eventually a few more individuals were arrested in Eric and Pam’s murder, but the full activities of the cult were never known.
