Louisiana’s swamps and marshes are one of the biggest attractions for tourists, and it’s easy to see why! While swamp tours are very popular, usually people opt to take a tour from an airboat or a pontoon boat. If you really want to get a feel for our beautiful wetlands, then you’ve got to check out a kayak tour in Louisiana.
Crescent City Kayak has been a favorite for both locals and tourists looking to spend a day on the water, and they have plenty of tours to choose from.
Two of the most popular kayak tours are the Manchac Swamp kayak tour and the Honey Island Swamp tour.
Both tours are about two hours long and perfect for all skill levels, so even if you’ve never paddled a day in your life, you can join one of these tours. On the flip side, if you’re an experiences kayaker and looking for more of a challenge, Crescent City Kayak offers a 6-hour Manchac Swamp tour.
Both Manchac and Honey Island Swamp are just dreamy, and during your trip you’ll have an experienced guide with you every stroke of the way, sharing their wealth of knowledge about the local ecosystems, history, and wildlife.
Wildlife sightings on these tours, are never guaranteed...but you have a really good chance at seeing at least one swamp critter.
Unlike the boat tours where they’ll feed the local wildlife to get them to come over, these kayak tours don’t do that.
Luckily, these waters are just chock-full of alligators, turtles, snakes, raccoons, hogs, and an endless range of birds.
In the warmer months, alligators are often spotted sunbathing along the banks, but every so often you may catch one swimming past you.
If this picture gives you anxiety, please know that alligators want very little to do with you. Alligator attacks are extremely rare, and let's remember...you're in their home. Yellowstone has more wildlife attacks than any Louisiana swamp tour.
While gators may be the star of the show, there are so many animals to be on the look out for, and bird lovers will especially enjoy checking the trees to see what's up above.
Egrets, herons, and anhinga are some of the more common sightings, but if you're really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of an owl...or better yet, an eagle swooping down to snag a snack!
These tours are great for families, and they have tandem kayaks so you can buddy up.
Kids need to be at least six years old (and they'll need to wear a life jacket).
Visit the Crescent City Kayak website to learn about all of the tours offered, and start planning your aquatic adventure today. Don't forget to pack some essentials with you, like bug spray, sunglasses, and bottled water.
