When you think of Southern California, you probably think of beaches, palm trees, and warm weather. While that’s a fair characterization, you might be surprised that there were mammoths roaming our beautiful home back in ancient times! One of the places we now know as a great tourist attraction was once the home of ancient animals galore: the La Brea Tar Pits.
The tar pits are a treasure trove of fossils from millions of animals from prehistoric times. You will truly feel like you’ve been transported way, way back in time to the Ice Age era.
While you’re outside enjoying the fascinating and unique scenery, be sure you take some time to look at the tar up close. You just might see a cool tar bubble popping up!
After you walk around outside at the actual tar pits, you can go into the museum to learn all about the historical significance of the fossils and the area in which we now live.
You will be completely amazed by the skill with which the staff and researchers have worked to reconstruct the animals’ skeletons so they look almost alive! It’s a great way to more fully understand the former furry residents of this area.
To learn even more fun facts, take in an exciting show that the kids will love too. The replicas will capture all of your attention as you learn about their lives. It’s incredible to think that all of this was buried in plain sight for such a long time!
You’ll get to learn about mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and more.
Researchers work hard discovering new fossils and artifacts all the time. It’s truly amazing to see about how many animals there were living here during the Ice Age.
The La Brea Tar Pits are certainly mystical. You can feel like you’re in Los Angeles one minute, and transported to prehistoric times the next. What’s your favorite part about visiting here?
