Winter in Kentucky is undeniably beautiful. Don't let those frigid temperatures deter you from exploring all there is to do! Glasgow-Barren County is overflowing with adventures of all shapes and sizes, and it's the perfect spot to spend a winter getaway. Here are just a few of the outdoor adventures you can have while exploring Cave Country:
1. Catch A Show At The Plaza Theatre
Sitting pretty in the heart of Downtown Glasgow, the Plaza Theatre has been a community favorite since 1934. Just a few of the historic headliners to play this stage include Roy Rogers, Dolly Parton, and Dinah Shore. Today the Plaza Theatre features year-round live performances from local artists, touring groups, and theater productions. See what's playing at the Plaza Theatre during your visit and snag some tickets!
2. Explore The World's Longest Cave System At Mammoth Cave National Park
You’ll never run out of things to do at Mammoth Cave National Park. Not only is it home to the longest cave system in the world, but it’s an incredible place to go hiking, biking, and horseback riding, too. Once the sun sets, the park takes on an entirely different perspective and it is one of the best places to go stargazing in Kentucky -- in fact, it's a Night Sky Certified location!
3. Get Cheesy at Kenny’s Farmhouse
No visit to Glasgow-Barren County is complete without trying some of the delicious cheese at Kenny’s Farmhouse. Come visit this working dairy farm, meet the cows, and then stock up on all your favorite cheeses.
4. Explore Diamond Caverns
Conveniently located next to Mammoth Cave National Park and open year-round, Diamond Caverns is not to be missed. Spend an hour on a guided tour through these magnificent caverns, viewing unique cave formations every step of the way. Speaking of steps, there are many! 350 to be exact.
5. Barren River Lake State Resort Park
Barren River Lake State Resort Park is a little slice of natural paradise in Kentucky. In the warmer months, Barren River Lake is a favorite spot for fishing, though you may want to enjoy a round of golf on the award-winning 18-hole golf course. Of course, the best way to explore the park is by hiking one of the park’s four hiking trails. You might even catch a glimpse at some of the wildlife in the area. Deer are often seen frolicking about!
6. Rock Out With Big Mike
Big Mike’s specializes in world-class rocks, crystals, and fossils so you can take your collection to the next level (or start a new collection!). After you’ve snagged a few new crystals, head over to the Mystery House for an experience that just needs to be seen to be believed. Don’t forget to snag a selfie with Big Mo--an authentic 65 million-year-old Mosasaur skull. It’s the world’s largest!
7. Shop 'Til Ya Drop
Downtown Glasgow is overflowing with charming boutiques, antique stores, jewelers, and virtually endless shopping opportunities. Spend an afternoon strolling down the streets and supporting local businesses. Learn more about the local shopping opportunities that await!
8. Hit The Trails At Brigadoon State Nature Preserve
This unspoiled oasis is next to Barren River Lake and boasts 187 acres to explore. The hiking trails will take you on an enchanting journey through ridge tops, ravines, and old-growth forests with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.
9. Grab A Bite And A Brew At Yancey’s
Located in the heart of the square in Glasgow, Yancey’s Gastropub & Brewery is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal after a day of adventures. Yancey’s, which is now on the West KY Brew Hop, offers a wide variety of craft beers to quench your thirst plus a hearty menu which promises something for everyone in your crew.
