Churches provide such rich history and beautiful architecture to the city! Along with their own congregations, these amazing structures are also greatly appreciated by all Louisvillians who pass by these amazing structures on a daily basis. 1. First Lutheran Church

First Lutheran Church was founded in 1872, and after moving from a few temporary locations, the church finally built this massive gothic-style church in 1902. During the early 1960s, urban renewal programs threatened to close the church, but the congregation successfully petitioned public officials to allow the church to remain at its Broadway location. This building is so unique and beautiful.

2. Cathedral of the Assumption

The Cathedral of the Assumption was built in 1852 and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Cathedral of the Assumption is a cathedral and mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. An interesting piece of history about this cathedral is that it was nearly destroyed after its construction,due to the riots on Bloody Monday on August 6, 1855. Anti-immigration and anti-Catholic Protestants attacked German and Irish Catholic neighborhoods, resulting in the deaths of 22 people. Luckily for the church, it remained after the incident, but those who committed these violent crimes went free without any convictions.

3. St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church

The parish of St. Louis Bertrand was founded in 1866 and the present-day English Gothic church was dedicated in 1873. The interior is just as breathtaking as the exterior, with intricate paintings, carvings, and stained glass windows.

4. Christ Church Cathedral

The historic Christ Church Cathedral was founded on May 31, 1822. The original church building was completed in 1824, while the current facade was added in 1870.

5. St. Agnes Church

St. Agnes was founded in 1871, though the current location was built in 1927. Much of the interior was imported from Italy, and it's absolutely magnificent.

6. St. Paul's German Evangelical Church

This church has not been in use for some time, at least not as it was originally intended to be used. Today, the space is rented out for use as a medical office due to its proximity to so many hospitals in the area. It's a beautiful location that will hopefully be preserved for many decades to come.

7. Walnut Street Baptist Church

In 1845, the church was located on 4th and Walnut, hence the name Walnut Street Baptist Church. In 1902, the church moved to its current location at 3rd and St. Catherine.

8. First Unitarian Church

The unique structure atop the church makes for a beautiful sight! Although the congregation was originally founded in 1830, it had to be rebuilt in 1989 due to a devastating fire.

9. St. James Catholic Church

Located on 1826 Edenside Ave., this beautiful Roman Catholic Church was constructed in 1913. It was designed by a popular Louisville architect named J. J. Gaffney.
