There's nothing like a good ghost story, and Kentucky is filled with them. With a long history of battles, conflicts, and passionate residents, it'd be difficult to find a town in Kentucky that doesn't have its own haunted tale. Many of these tales originate from abandoned places in Kentucky, buildings to towns to train tunnels. Located just outside of Campbellsville, the Spurlington Tunnel in Kentucky has a bone-chilling history and you can take a closer look with these photos and video.
Located in the woods of Kentucky, not far from Campbellsville, is the Spurlington Tunnel.
This abandoned train tunnel is on private property, but it was once an active railroad line. Trains ran right through the tunnel, which was built in the late 1800s.
Today the tunnel is on private property. The owners have opened their property to visitors in the past, but please respect their privacy and do not attempt to visit the tunnel without permission.
There are, however, many photos and some videos available from those who have visited in the past. And really the photos alone are spooky enough to make you believe this area is home to more than just trees and animals.
The tunnel is 1900 feet long and is the source of many tales.
Locals who have visited have reported mysterious sounds, sightings, and feelings.
Legend has it that Jesse James and his crew hung out in the area and even hid some of their loot in the tunnel.
And then one day, the outlaws noticed a local woman named Nancy Bass, who witnessed what they were up to. The story goes that she was killed by the gang and buried above the tunnel, along with the loot.
There is no grave marker in the area and no one has ever found the stolen money and goods.
However, some believe Nancy Bass was a witch and cursed the money and anyone who happens to find it. So maybe it's best to not try a treasure hunt anytime soon.
The inside of the tunnel has some signs of the former railroad, as well as other creepier sightings.
These carvings are likely from curious visitors/vandals and not from ghostly witches, but they are creepy nonetheless.
Many of the abandoned places in Kentucky have an interesting atmosphere that tends to be a little sad and somewhat ominous.
That is definitely the case with the Spurlington Tunnel, an abandoned train tunnel in Kentucky that is known to have a bone-chilling history.
