As Kentucky's largest city, Louisville has a lot of bragging rights. Everyone knows it plays host to the "greatest two minutes in sports" with the Kentucky Derby, but the epic fireworks display that starts the celebration may be even more impressive. Thunder Over Louisville is in its 27th year this year and with its thrilling air show and spectacular fireworks, you won't want to miss it.
About 27 years ago, Thunder Over Louisville took its place as one of the most unbelievable fireworks shows in the world. The CEO of the Kentucky Derby wanted to step up the festivities with a stellar opening ceremony type celebration, and it continues to astound today. Thunder takes place two weeks before the Kentucky Derby race and is the beginning of a city-wide party like no other.
The Kentucky Derby is a well-known feature of our "horse country" state, but the residents of Louisville know that the fun really starts with Thunder Over Louisville. On Saturday the 22nd, downtown will host an all-day celebration complete with a food fest and plenty of entertainment to keep you busy until the big show.
Before the fireworks are set off, Thunder performs one of the top 5 air shows in the country. The line up changes each year, but look to the sky starting at 3 p.m. for a heart-stopping display of bravery, speed and power.
It's been estimated that over half a million people head down to watch this show each year. So yes, it will be crowded. But that's part of the fun and you're best off to just embrace it. Thunder Over Louisville has several designated viewing locations where you can spend the day eating, playing and anticipating the thrills to come. Of course, there are many great locations around town to watch the show, and many nearby hotels, restaurants and businesses offer viewing parties.
The creators of Thunder focus on the quality of the show, over the quantity, which is one of the reasons it is so unbelievable. They aim to create 30 minutes of finale style fireworks that will make your heart beat out of your chest and your eyes stay wide open the entire time. The fireworks are also timed to perfectly selected music, meant to reach a wide audience and connect to each viewer.
