Unless you've been hiding in darkness, then you have likely heard of the upcoming historic moment when part of Kentucky will go completely dark. The Solar Eclipse of 2017 will occur on August 21st and our state is one of - if not THE - best spot to watch. There is a lot of excitement building for this epic event, and several areas of Kentucky are planning accordingly. There are dozens of viewing parties throughout the Bluegrass State and we've rounded up the best 9. For more information on each of these, just click on the bolded caption to visit its website.
1. Hopkinsville
Known as the "Point of Greatest Eclipse," Hopkinsville is the place to be on August 21st. This little town is expecting epic crowds for the 2 minutes and 40 seconds of history. There are a number of events and viewing spots in the area. A complete list is linked above!
2. Various Kentucky State Parks

3. CastlePost
While Versailles may not be the best location for viewing the full eclipse, you can't beat the ambiance of this party spot! You can choose from several ticket options, from a simple viewing to overnight stays.
This 170,000-area National Recreation Area is filled with ideal spots to watch the eclipse. Land Between the Lakes has recommended the Fenton Lake Access area, located right next to the four-lane US 68/KY 80 corridor and Eggners Ferry Bridge. There will be food vendors there and parking for dozens of vehicles. While it is the best spot to view the eclipse, it will likely be very crowded. Check out the site linked above for more spots in the area.
Dawson Springs is preparing for its 2 minutes and 32 seconds of total darkness in a big way. The town has activities scheduled throughout the weekend and on the big day itself. You can head to the area for the day or plan a camping trip and enjoy this beautiful area for the entire weekend.
6. Grand Rivers
Grand Rivers is one of the most exciting towns to visit in Kentucky and the day of the solar eclipse will be no different. It'll be great to watch from many spots in the area, but the Thirsty Turtle Tavern is hosting a party that sounds like a blast.
Cerulean, Kentucky has three days of epic festivities planned to celebrate its total eclipse status. Enjoy concerts, speakers and food at an elevated viewing area, ideal for watching the eclipse.
8. Franklin
For one of the most unique viewing options, head to the drive-in, in Franklin. Images will be projected on the screen and there will be overflow parking, ready for large crowds.
9. Paducah
In Paducah, the McCracken Public Library plans on hosting a viewing event that is free and open to the public. They will have free solar viewing glasses available, as well as moon pies and sun tea!
