Kentucky has many haunted tales and scary stories and is home to several destinations that are just downright creepy. Abandoned hospitals, graveyards, historic buildings - there are countless places to get creeped out here. If you enjoy the spooky side of the Bluegrass State, then you need to keep the Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum on your radar. Located on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, this little-known museum is open by appointment only, here's a sneak peek inside the creepiest museum in the country:

Transylvania University is a beautiful, historic destination in the heart of Lexington. There are many interesting stories tied to the university and one feature it often gets attention for is the Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum.

The Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum is a collection of artifacts, anatomical models, and botanical paintings that were used in the teachings of the medical school during the 1800s. These items were mostly obtained in Europe between 1820 and 1850 and were then brought to Transylvania University and its cutting-edge medical program.

The museum is named after a chemistry professor who worked at the school for decades. The instruments on display were used by students at what was one of the first medical schools in the country.

Many of the artifacts are extremely rare and the collection of items from the era is said to be one of the best in the world. Possibly the most intriguing piece is a Wax Medical Venus (shown below), which was state-of-the-art at the time and was used for students to practice and learn.

Another item that has a unique story is a 14-inch diameter hairball, shown in the middle of the photo below. This came from the stomach of a cow and was a gift from a relative of Abraham Lincoln who finished his training at the medical school.

Though small, the museum is filled with many objects that feel like they belong in a sci-fi or horror movie. Hospitals are often unpleasant places, but you can imagine they were even more so when these tools and instruments were in use.

The museum has gained national attention in many ways and even welcomed an interested celebrity visitor last year; Ozzy Osbourne and his son toured the museum, which is not all that surprising, given their famous interests and hobbies.

The collection is currently open by appointment only, but they do hope to make it more accessible soon.
