Strataca is an underground salt museum in Kansas that is certainly one of a kind.
The mine features one of the world’s largest deposits of rock salt. The original shaft first started in 1922 and today, there are more than 150 miles of tunnels.
While an area of this salt mine is still open today, you can journey 650 feet below the earth’s surface to a portion of the mine where everything is exactly as it was nearly 50 years ago.
The Salt Mine Express is a train that will take you on a tour of this closed area of the mine. As you travel throughout this area underground, you'll learn all about the history and the challenges of the mine.
You’ll also learn about all of the rules, challenges, and procedures that are necessary to keep mines safe and functional for miners today.
The Salt Mine Express is a narrated and guided tour, keeping you engaged and informed throughout your entire ride.
After your tour on the Salt Mine Express, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore the museum and to enjoy some of the other unique attractions at the museum such as the Dark Ride and the Salt Safari Shuttle.
Also, keep in mind that children under the age of four are not allowed underground. It also is approximately 68 degrees Fahrenheit at all times underground so you may want to bring a jacket. All individuals inside the mine are required to wear hard hats.
