A stunning beauty that you can see from the distance, this Cathedral of the Plains is truly a sight to behold. If you've been planning road trips, make sure to add a pit stop at the St. Fidelis Basilica for a beautiful aside to your travels. You'll find it in Victoria, as beautiful as ever.
In the distance, standing above the grain, trees, and more, a beautiful church stands tall. Known as The Cathedral of the Plains, St. Fidelis Basilica is not actually a cathedral, but sure feels like one to us.
Sitting on Cathedral street, this church is a thing of beauty, as it has been since it was completed in 1911. Though it has been repaired and renovated along the way, the 141-foot-tall looming towers and beautiful front windows are as they always were.
At the time of its construction, the church sat 1,100 and was the largest church west of the Mississippi River. Though it no longer holds that title, it remains one of Kansas's eight wonders.
Inside the church is almost as beautiful as the outside, if not more. On days that it's open to the public, it's a must-see for any Kansan.
One of the main draws to St. Fidelis is the beautiful flower-shaped stained glass window upfront and center. I could gaze at this for hours, and I am sure many others could as well.
Though they're not as unique of a shape, the windows running the length of the church are just as breathtaking. Each has an illustration in glass, protected by clear tempered glass that will keep them safe from almost anything Kansas can throw at them.
During normal operation, they have listed opening dates and hours on their website. They keep things updated, so make sure to check the bulletin and mass schedule!
