When it comes to spooky, scary, and creepy locations, there are two kinds of people: those who run in, and those who run away. If you are a member of the former group, you'll want to know about these little-known haunted places in Iowa.

1. With plans to elope, a young woman named Lucinda was supposed to meet her fiance on Stony Hollow Road in Burlington.

When her lover changed his mind and left her there to wonder what happened, she threw herself off of the cliff in a fit of despair. Locals say Lucinda's house is nearby and remains cursed. As it turns out, her lover was simply delayed because his horse-drawn buggy was stuck in the mud. Many people report seeing Lucinda's figure along the side of the road at night. Others say they've seen her near the cliff where she jumped to her death.

2. The Independence Mental Health Institute opened in 1873. Located in a small Iowa town, this grand building still holds creepy remnants of days-gone-by when hydrotherapy tubs, lobotomy equipment, and countless atrocious medical tools were commonly used to "help" patients in the institution.

The dark and gruesome past of this place affects people today, as employees report being grabbed, feeling cold drafts in closed rooms, and seeing things they just can't explain. You'll find this amazing building at 2227 Iowa Avenue in Independence. It is not open for tours, and visitors are generally not welcome.

3. In 1973, four Sioux Falls teenagers were murdered by a group of three brothers posing as DEA officials.

This spooky site is all that's left of the building near where the murders occurred. You'll have to hike into Gitchie Manitou Park to get there at 52141, Adams Ave, Larchwood.

4. The Farrar Schoolhouse, built in 1921, has been abandoned for 15 years.

People say they've been attacked by mysterious shadowy figures and seen the outlines of people standing at the windows. The school is located at 11125 NE 134th Avenue in Maxwell.

5. Edinburgh Manor is a former insane asylum that most people steer clear of.

Those brave enough to visit have seen "The Joker" and have reported being choked, pushed, hit, and kicked by this violent ghost. You'll find this now-abandoned building at 13241 E23 County Home Road in Scotch Grove.

6. Helen died on October 19, 1918. While most Iowans have heard of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, you probably don't know about this Voorhees Hall resident.

Students say that Helen appears beside beds during the darkest hours of night, slams doors, and pulls the covers off of beds.

7. Visit the iced-over Moose Pond in Spencer and you may get more than a pretty view.

Locals say a boy died there while ice fishing, and they've seen and heard him screaming from beneath the ice.

8. The chandelier in the entrance of the Hawkeye Community Theater moves on its own and turns on and off for no apparent reason.

Locals say that it's the ghost of an unfortunate girl that was murdered near the theater. Witnesses say they've seen her sitting in the hall and felt her brush by in the theater.

9. The Iowa State University campus in Ames is famously haunted, but you may not know about the problem at Friley Hall.

The University Housing Department leaves one room empty, after students reported being too freaked out to live in it. The home of a former ISU student who killed himself is now, and forever, vacant. Residents think they know which room it is, and they steer clear of the door for fear they'll vanish.

10. This former cavalry armory has the National Guard spooked.

The jingling of harnesses and sounds of horses' hooves are a somewhat common occurrence, in spite of the fact that the cavalry hasn't occupied this location in over 100 years. A man wearing a cavalry uniform has also been spotted on more than one occasion at this haunted location.
