You know a popcorn company is playing a different game when it serves up a flavor called "Zombie Mix." For more than 35 years, Iowa's own Lotta-Pop has been producing some of the most delicious popcorn around, including some unusual flavors you won't find anywhere else. Based in Ankeny, Lotta-Pop popcorn can be found on store shelves around the Midwest, as well as at events around the Des Moines area, like the Des Moines Farmers Market.
For the biggest selection, head to Lotta-Pop's Ankeny retail store. You'll find an amazing variety of flavors, but be careful - some of this popcorn is so good you'll keep grabbing handful after handful.
Alonzo "Lonnie" Brandmeyer started the company in 1969 and came up with the Lotta-Pop name. He created it by combining the "Lo" from his name and "tta" from his wife's name, Theatta.
On Saturdays from May-October, you'll find Lotta-Pop kettle corn and caramel corn at farmers' markets in Des Moines, Ankeny and Ames. Stop by the stand - you can't visit the market and only buy kale and radishes!
Over the years, the popcorn has received a "lotta" attention.
If you like your popcorn spicy, try the jalapeno cheddar, or the jalapeno fireball.
You can buy Lotta-Pop popcorn in your team's colors.
You can also buy some unusual flavors. Zombie Mix is a combination of Green Apple, Blueberry, Cherry and Strawberry. This photo shows the Princess Mix (grape, strawberry and vanilla) and the caramel and cheese mix.
The store sells popcorn in all quantities, from a small bag, to a 48-gallon "popcorn feast."
If you can't make it to the retail store or the markets, Lotta-Pop's products are also available on its website. While Lotta-Pop is hard to top, Almost Famous Popcorn also has some big fans.
