Have you heard the story of Kate Shelley, an Irish-American from Boone who risked her life to save dozens of people? She quickly became a local legend for her heroic actions. Iowan Kate Shelley started off life in Ireland, but immigrated to America in 1865.
Young Kate was a farm girl living on a modest homestead in the town of Boone, Iowa, when one act of bravery would put her in the history books forever.
On July 6, 1881, a fierce storm rolled in to the Des Moines River Valley. A trestle near Honey Creek had given out, and Kate knew there was another train due for that route. With all lines of communication wiped out by the storm, 17 year old Kate Shelley crawled across one of the most enormous trestle bridges in the country while the weather raged around her.
Luckily, Kate made it across the bridge, and by the time she got to the Mongoina’s Chicago and Northwestern Depot, the train had already been stopped.
When it re-opens, it will be by appointment only. Kids and adults will have the chance to see all sorts of railroad artifacts, and remnants of life in rural, railroad-era Iowa.
The park is the perfect place for a picnic, or to do a little exploring.
While the Des Moines River Bridge that Shelley crossed no longer exists, the rural road trip from Boone to the Kate Shelley High Bridge will take you over some passes that provide amazing views.

The pumpkin field is almost overwhelmingly large when you first see it, with gourds of every shape and size waiting for you. Harvestville Farm is another massive pumpkin patch in Iowa, and this Donnellson farm is really more like a full-fledged farm attraction. Its country store is acclaimed around the whole state, but during the fall festival, the entire place is transformed into a fun destination with more than 40+ family-friendly activities and delicious treats. The variety of pumpkins and gourds is one of the biggest in the state.

If you love smoked meats, this is the event for you! Denison hosts the Tri City BBQ Fest every year, bringing restauranteurs and pitmasters from around Iowa to offer a taste of their signature items. Arnolds Park is where you'll find The Ritz, a long-time family-friendly institution with an extensive menu ranging from casual fare like nacho fries to delicious steak dinners. The biggest attraction is the massive patio with a gorgeous view of the nearby lake.
Iowa's amusement parks are fantastic - but they're also seasonal. All three close for the season not long after school is back in session, so the time is now to get some thrills in. If there's one small town to visit before summer is up, it's Clear Lake. Its signature attraction is the Surf Ballroom, a historic music venue that holds concerts most weeks during the summer. There is no better way to feel like you're being transported back to the heyday of rock and roll - some of August's acts include The Schmidt Brothers and Drop Dead Dangerous.
There is no better view in Iowa than the Mighty Mississippi, and no better way to see it than with a ride on the Riverboat Twilight, leaving from Le Claire. The sunset dinner cruise on this riverboat is excellent, offering hearty plated dinners like pot roast and barbecue chicken and ending with dessert and sweet tea before you head out to watch the sunset on the deck. Longer two-day cruises are available if you've fallen in love with this boat.
We all need a festival to kiss summer goodbye, and one of the best is coming up at Jasper Winery in Des Moines. This new cider festival is only in its second year, but it's impressed everyone who attended with its diverse mix of hard ciders, delicious treats like apple cider donuts, and live entertainment. It's taking place on August 24th this year, and we can't wait!
