When the earliest European settlers in Iowa established their home in what is now Washington County, they were starting brand new lives in unchartered territory. As they tamed the wild Iowa Prairie, they established the village of Kalona, Iowa. Now, one of the most unique places in Iowa, the Kalona Historical Village preserves the original sites where these settlers made their home, and visiting is like stepping back in time to the 1840s.
The Kalona area of Iowa is known for having the largest Amish and Mennonite community west of the Mississippi.
In the 1840s, some of the earliest European settlers in Iowa made their home in the Kalona area. The Amish that settled this area quickly built a strong and close-knit community.
Today, the historic Village of Kalona has been preserved just as it was in the 1800s, when the first settlers established their homes.
When you visit, you'll be able to see what life was like in the earliest days of Iowa.
Throughout the year, Kalona Historical Village offers tours, festivals, craft shows and other experiences to visitors.
The festival days offer plenty of opportunity for families to see what life was really like in the 1800s - from one-room schoolhouses to genuine farm work. Quilting is a popular hobby among local artists, and you'll find some of the most amazing hand-spun and hand-woven pieces at any of their festivals or fairs.
Children, in particular, love seeing the old-fashioned toys that were once as exciting as iPads and Hatchimals are today.
One of their most popular programs is their family dinner tour. Dine in a Mennonite home before enjoying a guided tour of historic and cultural sites.
