Even if you didn’t know about its reputation for being haunted or its collapse in 1922 that killed two people, The Columbus Junction Swinging Bridge (aka, Lover’s Leap Bridge) will make your stomach drop as you cross its swinging expanse of 262 feet. The bridge was first built in 1886, and it was reconstructed in 1904. After the 1922 collapse, it was rebuilt once more into the bridge that stands in Columbus Junction today. Legend has it, though, that it’s still haunted by the ghost of a young maiden with a broken heart.
If you decide to visit, whatever you do, walk quickly, don’t look down and beware of ghosts!
Legend has it that a young Native-American threw herself from the original bridge into the ravine below, killing herself. She was heartbroken because her lover had died in battle.
She is said to be buried at the bottom of the ravine, haunting the area ever since her tragic lover’s leap.
If you’re brave enough to go at night, you might even hear the young woman crying over her lost lover.
