Ever since it opened its doors in the 1960s, the original Stanley Museum of Art in Iowa City was considered by many to be the best art museum in Iowa. However, its original University of Iowa home was destroyed by a flood in 2008, although virtually all the art was safely evacuated. The impressive collection of classic, modern, and global art had to make do in guest facilities - until now. The new Stanley Museum of Art will be opening its doors in a new state-of-the-art facility on August 26th, 2022 - and the many people responsible can't wait to see you at the grand opening!
The Stanley Museum of Art is reopening in its proper University of Iowa home - in a massive and modern new building!
The impressive architecture is highlighted by a large lightwell, which will provide a stunning view of the campus from above.
When you arrive, you'll be greeted by a mural by the legendary Jackson Pollock, one of the highlights of the collection.
The museum is home to one of the largest collections of traditional African art in the midwest.
Traditional pottery and crafts celebrating the indigenous art of the Americas are also getting a major spotlight at the museum.
This includes a collection of authentic textiles from both indigenous American artists and cultures around the world.
The ceramics collection is more modern but no less impressive, featuring complex crafts ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.
A huge photography collection provides a fascinating view into times gone by in Iowa and beyond.
The larger pieces from the collection are still available for viewing - in the large garden surrounding the museum.
Don't miss the upcoming Art & Write Night, held at the nearby University of Iowa Museum of Natural History on August 5th - a family-friendly way to get hyped for the upcoming opening of this museum!
