In Boone, you can buy a ticket into railway history that will take you to some of Iowa's best views. The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad owns several locomotives and offers excursions from Boone to the old coal-mining town of Fraser, via a bridge that will take you high into the sky.
The excursion has several options and you can choose your car. You can relax in a 1920’s era coach car, experience what it was like to ride the rails in a caboose, get a dramatic view of the river valley from an open-air car or ride in comfort in a classic Chicago and North Western bi-level commuter coach.
Whatever car you chose, when you buy a ticket, get ready to hang onto your seat - you are in for a view that you won't believe.
The rides are operated by the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum, a division of the Iowa Railroad Historical Society. It's a non-profit, operating railroad museum that helps preserve railroad history. It inspires and educates the public, one ride at a time.
A variety of excursions are available, including picnic, lunch and dinner trains. When this bridge approaches, you may forget all about eating.
This bridge was built from 1912-13 over Bass Point Creek to replace an older wooden bridge that spanned the valley. The Bass Point Creek High Bridge is the highest single-track interurban railroad bridge in the United States.
The bridge towers 156 feet into the sky. If you're afraid of heights, don't look out the window!
But you may want to sneak a peek - the view is incredible!
This is a train ride you won't forget anytime soon!
The railway sometimes runs special event excursions that are popular with kids. Past excursions have included Thomas The Tank Engine™, Easter Bunny Express, Pumpkin Express and Santa Express™ trains. When you're in Boone, take time to explore the associated James H. Andrew Railroad Museum, which has artifacts and displays related to several of the state's old railway lines.
Now that you have this amazing view checked off your list, here are 11 more Iowa scenic spots you simply have to see.
