Churches have great architecture, beauty and history. People travel all around the world to admire them, like the Cathedral of Notre Dame or the Sistine Chapel. But, luckily for us Iowans, we don't need to leave the state to see some absolutely gorgeous churches. Here are 10 beautiful churches in Iowa that are like works of art.
1. St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene
This church was founded in the 1870's and just celebrated 100 years in the building it's currently in. The immaculately beautiful church was recently remodeled.
2. Little Flock Chapel in Appanoose County
This tiny chapel in Plano is a simple but beautiful building. It's also a popular spot for tourists, who stop to take pictures of the tiny chapel.
3. Riverside Baptist Church in Burlington
This gorgeous old church in Burlington is a classic, brick beauty - a bit weathered and worn but it still retains its beauty.
4. Battle Center Methodist Church in Holstein
The Battle Center Church in Holstein is a charming old country church with a rustic twist.
5. St. Anthony of Padua Chapel in Winneshiek County
This chapel near Festina bills themselves as the smallest chapel in the world. Built 1885, this tiny chapel seats 8 people and is open to the public for free visits.
6. This small country church somewhere in western Iowa
This church in western Iowa has a classic, rural Iowan look to it and it looks just magical under the night sky.
7. Pieta Chapel in St. Donatus
This gorgeous and decorative chapel in St. Donatus was built in 1885 and is modeled after the Chapel du Bildchen in Vianden, Luxembourg.
8. Trappist Monastery in Peosta
The Trappist Monastery, or New Melleray Abbey, was founded in 1849 by six monks. The Abbey is absolutely beautiful, and looks like something straight out of a BBC period-drama.
9. St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Des Moines
The St. Paul's Episcopal Church's first service was held in 1854. This beautiful Gothic Revival style church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
10. Morning Star Chapel in Elk Horn
The Morning Star Chapel was built in 1951 by Charles Johann Walensky, a Danish immigrant living in Waterloo. The miniature chapel has four pews and is available for weddings. I would venture to say that this is probably the smallest chapel in the world, four seats smaller than St. Anthony of Padua.
