Tucked away in Jasper, Indiana there's a rock garden that will blow your mind. This place is begging to be seen by all, and it's about time you check it out. Scroll on for the most spectacular creation you never knew was in the Hoosier State. We present, one of our favorite roadside attractions - the Geode Grotto in Indiana!
The Geode Grotto situated behind the cemetery at St. Joseph Catholic Church in southern Indiana is one of the most incredible and little-known sights in the Hoosier State.
Put together over the course of 10 years between 1960 and 1970, this rock garden and grotto is a religious symbol inspired by a similar structure in Lourdes, France.
Walking through the grotto will take each visitor through the journey of the stations of the cross, which are the dozen or so depictions of the final moments of Jesus' life after he is condemned to be crucified.
Constructed by an Italian immigrant, Father Phillip Ottavi, who was orphaned by a giant earthquake in 1908, this piece of art is part of his lifework to help the less fortunate.
Throughout this religious rock garden, you will find many statues of Mary and Jesus surrounded by local Indiana stones.
In addition to the journey, there are two main shrines everyone must see here. The Mother of God Shrine sits at the south end of the property and the Joseph Shrine is at the north end.
You don't have to be Catholic or religious to enjoy this majestic piece of art. All are welcome to view the incredible construction and take pictures.
If you've ever been to this spot, we'd love to hear from you. Please share your experiences and photos with us in the comments.
