Whether you believe the spooky stories or not, haunted places in Indiana are downright fascinating. The spots often come along with intriguing, often tragic, history. It seems that no matter where you wander in the Hoosier State, you'll find somewhere rumored to be home to a ghost or two. We even have a haunted college in Indiana! Founded in 1842, the University of Notre Dame has a lengthy history with more than its share of on-campus tragedies. As a result, many are left wondering "Is Notre Dame haunted?" We'll let you be the judge of that, but if you believe College Consensus, the University of Notre Dame isn't just one of the most haunted places in Indiana, it's one of the top 10 most haunted college in the entire United States!
The University of Notre Dame was established in the mid-1800s and quickly became a force to be reckoned with. Whether you're talking about football, academics, or hauntings, this place is notorious.
It wasn't long before the campus had made a name for itself in sports and academics, and the legendary "Fighting Irish" of Notre Dame were born.
However, as we all know, with old buildings comes a lot of history. Sometimes that history is a tad bit on the dark side.
Notre Dame has not been spared by its own darkness. There have been several recorded and confirmed deaths on campus. There's even a cemetery on the grounds, where priests, faculty, and other campus residents were permanently laid to rest. It's no surprise that the cemetery is supposedly a hotbed of paranormal weirdness, but it's actually not the most haunted area of campus.
The building on campus that is considered to have the most lurking spirits is Washington Hall, built in 1881.
There are at least three known ghosts in Washington Hall. Each is thought to be the spirit of a person who is confirmed to have lived and died on campus - these aren't baseless rumors! One of the spirits is that of a worker who fell from the roof during the building's construction. Another is rumored to be a student professor by the name of Jim Minavi. Despite dying in 1919, it is said that Minavi enjoys practicing his French horn in the middle of the night, when the living are trying to sleep.
The most famous ghost at Notre Dame is the restless spirit of George Gipp. This all-American Notre Dame football star died of pneumonia in 1920, during his senior year at the university.

The ghosts of Washington Hall are by far the most notorious, but that doesn't mean there aren't other areas of campus often given the side-eye by superstitious students and staff.
The campus's Main Building is another pretty creepy place. It's actually the third building of its kind to be built in the same location. The first two burned to the ground under unexplained circumstances. The source of both blazes are still unknown, but the current Main Building seems to be doing all right... for now.
Anyone with even a passing interest in ghost stories should definitely check the University of Notre Dame out sometime. Who could resist the most haunted college in Indiana?
The campus offers year-round tours, but if you wait until fall, you might be able to go on a haunted tour.
