Avon is a small town in Hendricks County, known for its picturesque parks and family-friendly activities. It also happens to be home to an infamous bridge with more than one ghost story attached to it. And whether or not you believe in paranormal activity, all it takes is one walk in this area at night to know that something sinister definitely happened here.... several somethings, as legend has it.
The Avon Bridge was built in 1906 off County Road 625 East, about a half-mile south of U.S. 36.
It was originally constructed for the Big Four Railroad.
Unfortunately, the bridge's construction wasn't an entirely smooth process, which is part of the reason for the alleged hauntings.
Rumor has it that a man fell into the cement during the construction of the bridge and was buried alive. Removing his body from the concrete would have been far too costly, so the body was left buried. That would probably make anyone want to haunt the bridge.
According to local legend, some people can hear the screams and cries of the poor man who fell to his death at night... and the worst part is, he wasn't the only one who perished during its construction.
According to the plaque on the bridge, four men also fell to their deaths (this time into the creek) during the building process. People can sometimes hear thuds and splashes in the creek at night. But when they look at the creek, the water looks calm and peaceful.
But the worst story -- yes, it gets worse -- is the tale of the young mother who was carrying her baby across the bridge and was met with the worst possible tragedy.
The woman carried her baby across the railroad tracks in hopes of taking her sick baby to the doctor. Sadly, she slipped and fell from the bridge, and both she and her baby were killed.
Many people have reported hearing the sounds of a woman screaming at night. Some even claim to have heard a baby crying.
To this day, some locals honk when they drive under the bridge in hopes of muffling the sounds of her screams.
While there is no definitive proof that any of these stories are true, they have been around for so long that most people just accept them as facts.
We certainly can't say for sure if this bridge is haunted or if it's hiding any sinister secrets. But we aren't about to volunteer to find out firsthand.
