I'm all about the sweet side of fall, like walking through corn mazes and picking out a pumpkin. But sometimes you just want to get the pants scared off of ya. Here are nine of the best haunted houses/experiences in Illinois.
1. Statesville Haunted Prison
In Crest Hill, Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead brings you an experience like no other, where the notorious prisoners of Statesville have rioted, guards have fled, and darkness cover this maximum security prison. You will make your way through 23 maximum security cells and must come face to face with 100 criminals who were too evil to die.
2. The Massacre Haunted House
In Montgomery, The Massacre Haunted House awaits your soul. It was voted the scariest haunted house in Illinois 2014 by both the Chicago Tribune and Haunted Illinois. The scare tactics you will see here are unlike anything you will experience at any other haunted house. You will be legitimately scared, with those tell-tale hairs standing up on the back of your neck. Oh my goodness!
3. Dungeon of Doom Haunted House
In Zion, Dungeon of Doom takes up 42,000 square feet to scare you to death. Even if you went last year, they are always adding new special effects to sufficiently haunt you. If you are in Chicago or the Milwaukee area, this is the largest haunted place to go. If you want a life-like (or, I guess in this case, death-like...) experience, head out to Dungeon of Doom.
4. Haunted Infirmary at Bartonville Insane Asylum
See this Bartonville building? We didn't put the incorrect photo in the story. This is actually where the haunted house takes place. Can you say creepy????? Here's the setup: an asylum closed and a bunch of maniacal scientists created some wickedly horrible experiments. You will be sufficiently freaked out.
5. Boo Crew Haunted House
In Mechanicsburg, the Boo Crew Haunted House has been scaring people since 2001. What's unique about this haunted house is that it is run by the Rochester Lions Club and the actors are all volunteers. Still, it is super demented, creepy, and scary.
6. Freakshow and the Haunt at Bone Saw Mill
In Champaign, Freakshow and Haunt at Bone Saw Mill was voted #1 most intense. In fact, there are TWO haunts in this one location: the freak show and the (all new) haunt at bone saw mill. Freak show is the result of military experiments run amok. The bone saw mill is full of paranormal happenings. And also there are eerie clowns laughing. You will be scarrrrred.
7. Rob Zombie's Great American Nightmare
Over in Villa Park, Rob Zombie's Great American nightmare combines three haunted houses into one location. And, yes, it is curated by groundbreaking filmmaker Rob Zombie. You will be overwhelmed with the macabre, tons of animatronics and effects, and a super scary maze. Claustrophobic? This definitely isn't for you.
8. Mazon Dungeon of Terror
In Mazon, the Dungeon of Terror has been sufficiently scaring the pants off of people since 1999. Doors open on October 3 to kick off the 2015 season. It is sufficiently gory, gruesome, and all the things you look for in a haunted house.
9. The Realm of Terror Haunted House
In Round Lake Beach, Realm of Terror is a true horror "experience." All kinds of professional special effects makeup artists, set and sound designers, and filmmakers have come together to create one of the most interactive haunted experiences ever. You start out by volunteering to take a tour of Quixotic Labs, until you realize the next test is going to be conducted on you. Is it too late?
