It's the most wonderful time of the year: the holiday shopping season! And I'm not talking about the throwing-elbows-at-big-box-stores kind — I mean the small town, brimming with local charm and lots of traditions kind. As a Christmas Eve baby, immersing myself in that Lifetime-movie-level amount of Christmas spirit is my winter cup of tea. And while we have the incredible German Christkindlmarket in the Chicago area, this European holiday market in Bishop Hill, Illinois is another festive option for reveling in the Christmas season while enjoying some local culture and gift giving, too.
Located in northwestern Illinois' Henry County, Bishop Hill is a historic small town with a rich Swedish heritage that bills itself as the "utopia of the prairie."
Each year, it holds a two-weekend European Christmas extravaganza inspired by its Swedish roots called Julmarknad — or Christmas Market. With shopping, kids' activities, museums, music, and cookies, it's a holly jolly good time.
In 2023, the event is Nov. 24-26 and Dec. 2-3 — make sure to check out the Bishop Hill Heritage Association website and social media pages for the full schedule!
The event is marked by artisan shopping, with some wares being made right before you. Take home handmade goods and crafts for some of the most fun, unique, and one-of-a-kind gifts.
There are also demonstrations of many old trades, including cooking, candle making, ceramics, bread baking, and more.
However, don't be surprised if you feel the watching eyes of little elves behind you. The Tomten, or Swedish elves, are known to roam around town, peeking into windows and around corners with their pointy red hats and long beards.
You may also encounter Julbock the Christmas goat, known to galavant around town.
One of the market's greatest traditions is its Dala horse painting and take-home kits at the Vasa National Archives. Buy your own DIY package, or spend $5 to paint yours on the spot. Pro tip: Let it dry while you explore!
Stop by the Steeple Building Museum to admire a working model railroad, including a tiny Christmas village and its people.
Other staples include the annual Cookie Walk, during which a photographer is on hand for professional family photos, and the Chocolate Walk, which offers mouthwatering homemade chocolates up by the pound. Whatever you do, don't forget to make or pick up your annual tree ornament!
If you're ready to experience this one-of-a-kind European holiday market in Bishop Hill, Illinois, visit the Bishop Hill Heritage Association's website and Facebook page. While you're in town, why not make it a weekend getaway? Bishop Hill is a tiny town of less than 130 residents and measures only 7 blocks wide — yet it has multiple museums worth exploring and is less than an hour's drive to Davenport, Iowa. Stay at the top-rated local bed-and-breakfast Twinflower Inn, built in an 1855 hospital used by a Swedish colony.
