There are so many amazing winter activities in Illinois that you could probably spend each day in November, December, and January exploring something new. From eagle festivals to holiday light displays, the Prairie State transforms into a glowing winter wonderland as soon as the season turns cold. As a Christmas Eve baby, I love soaking in the splendor of winter (except shoveling, of course...). And one of the very best Christmas displays in Chicago is an over 80-year tradition that celebrates the special season around the world.
The Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light festival takes place each year at the renowned Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago's South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park. From November through early January, the museum transforms into a global celebration of winter holidays and light, punctuated with plenty of science.
Since 1942, the event has been a staple for Illinois families to attend during the holidays. Traditions from across the world are on full display for all to admire, relate to, and learn from.
The original event began with a single decorated tree surrounded by flags to show solidarity with U.S. allies during World War II.
Today, there is a dazzling showcase of over 50 trees and light displays that teach visitors all about the many ways families across the globe celebrate the season.
Each tree is thoughtfully decorated with authentic ornaments representing a country and its rich traditions. Thousands of volunteers spend hours putting the trees together, which together and individually tell the story of Christmas around the world.
See firsthand the beautiful garments worn by winter revelers across the earth. The result is a fun, bright, and breathtaking demonstration of Christmas and wintry goodness from dozens of perspectives.
Don't leave without getting a photo with Santa or the 45-foot Grand Tree. And make sure to explore the rest of the museum for its additional winter-themed science displays, like this year's Science of Snow.
Admission to the festival is included in regular ticket prices, though official photo portraits cost extra. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with some exceptions, and the festival lasts through Jan. 7, 2024.
